Another Stupid Survey
Apr. 9th, 2004 08:43 amWhere were you when:
1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (22/11/1963)
I think my mother was just beginning to like boys at this point...but still, I wasn't even a twinkle in anyone's eye yet.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (18/5/1980)
I was three years old at this point and totally unaware.
3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (28/1/1986)
I was in fourth grade and in chapel at school. They came in and interrupted the service to tell us what had happened. I wound up writing the president to tell him how sad I was for the astronauts and their families. Ironically, I didn't know anything about the ship until it crashed.
4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (7/10/1989)
I was in between seventh and eighth grade at the time. I remember this earthquake because we couldn't get through to my aunt who lived in Haight Ashbury at the time (luckily she'd been vacationing in Ojai at the time and was safe). I also remember seeing pictures of the Bay Bridge and it's collapsed sections and being horrified.
5. When the Berlin Wall fell (7/11/1989)
Holy moly, that's a hell of a week. Again, it was a junior high summer and I remember seeing the cover of Newsweek with people tearing away pieces of the wall. I had no concept of the import of the event.
6. When the Gulf War began (16/1/1991)
I was a freshman in high school and I remember being forced to write letters to American Servicemen who were serving in Iraq. I don't remember the start of the war, but I do remember that my pen pal was able to leave the day before it started because his wife went into very premature labor. I later met him (and it was awkward as hell). I wasn't a peacenik then.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (17/6/1994)
I was a senior in high school and I remember thinking, "this man is guilty as hell." Imagine my surprise when we wound up watching his trial verdict (in my college biology class).
8. When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed (19/4/1995)
I was in college at the time and sadly, I don't think it really registered with me.
9. When Princess Di was killed (31/8/1997)
Living on Colgate St. sitting at my desk thinking no-freaking-way.
10. When Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire on their classmates at Columbine High School (20/4/1999)
I was at Cafe Roma studying for a test when the barrista told me that two kids went nuts in Colorado and shot up their school. I remember going home, watching the news, and staring in horror.
11. When Bush was first announced President (7/11/2000)
Um, I seem to remember this taking more than a few days. I remember that I was in Model UN class checking the return results on my neighbor (England's) cell phone.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (28/2/2001)
Huh?
13. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (11/9/2001)
I was asleep when my boyfriend called to tell me that I needed to turn on the news because to whit, "they were having some trouble in NY." That certainly didn't prepare me for what I was about to see.
14. When Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas. (1/2/2003)
Sunday morning, I was talking to my mother and she told me that the shuttle went down. I assumed she meant a commuter shuttle plane.
