As a juxtaposition to all the prurient content of the last few entries, here's an email from my baby sister (she's a seventh grader)....(she sent it to me after I asked who her crush was from some silly horoscope test)...

Dear Cassandra,

I have a question, well there is an icecream social every year towards
the
end of the year. the social is next friday. Well there is a guy I want
to go to
the social with but I don't know what to say? Mom already knows who I
want to
go with, so does dad. can you e-mail me or call me tonight, please?

love sue
p.s. The guy I chose for the horoscope test
is Steven and
he is the guy I want to go to the icecream social with.Since you really
wanted to know.

And here's what I wrote back...

Susan,

I'll try to help if I can. :)

Are you two friends already? Does he like you? Does he know that you like him? Have you heard anything from your friends? Do you normally talk to him? Do people generally ask one another to go to the ice cream social or is it just a casual thing?
I sorta need to know about these things before I can offer any advice...email me back.

Though my general advice would be if you're just casual about it and ask him if he wants to hang out with you at the social that he'll go with you...you are just too cute to resist!

Love,
Cassandra

PS Sue and Steven sitting in a tree K I S S I N G! Just kidding! Good luck.

Sorry, it's a warm and fuzzy moment I had to share.

I'm always amazed that she has such a good relationship with my parents. When I was her age I was never home, let alone sharing information about my crushes or school activities with the 'rents. I'm glad its a healthier environment for her and my other little sister but it's totally alien to me.

So, I got a reply from Sue...

C,
Guess what I asked Steven out to the icecream social, and guess what?
He said
YES! But he has to ask his grandparents first, he's not quite sure if
they
will say yes, but he really wants to go. You know I was so nervous
about asking
him, you know it's scary. But my friend had helped me through it, but
she
wasn't there when I had asked him. Now other people are trying to get a
hold of
him. I'm so lucky, it's my first date with a guy, well it's sort of a
date. Also
Kara is getting a date for the icecream social to isn't that cool.well
call
me .
love sue
p.s. i have his phone number and e-mail address. Call me around 6:30.

So little sis went after her man with some success...bravisimo? Is it just me or does anyone else find it disturbing that 11 and 12 year olds are trolling for dates? That my baby sister is already learning to view dating as a competition? That male attention bestowed upon her is "lucky"? That she's treating said boy like an object to be won?
I know, I know, it's a precious moment and I am overreacting, but still...this strikes me as an intro to the gamey bullshit world of dating. All of that comes soon enough...I wish they'd enjoy being kids just a bit longer.
