A Question for those of you familar with the Jewish faith.

My birthday falls on Yom Kippur. I'd like more information on the significance of the day, but all the sites I've googled seem to be directed towards those already in the know.

I understand that it's about atonement and starting anew, but I'd like to know how and why.

Could someone help a Catholic girl out?
